When I worked at Lamar a few years ago, my family and I quickly discovered that it was a haven for playing Pokemon Go. It’s the perfect place to wander while catching and training Pokemon, with PokeStops at nearly every building and landmark, at least five gyms spread across campus, and plenty of benches and beautiful walkways.

After weeks of cold, rainy weather, our little family was thrilled to ditch the heavy jackets and spend some outside time in the sunshine. We decided Friday afternoon was a great time to explore our old stomping grounds and play some Pokemon Go, since most classes are out and the campus tends to be less busy.

Friday, 2:00 pm

Our journey began outside of the Setzer Center, where my husband and I got to introduce our son, Bear, to the giant statue of Mirabeau Lamar’s head. We spun several PokeStops, took some cool pictures, and caught a LOT of Blitzle, Magnemite, and Electrike as we headed along the walkways. Bear’s buddy Pokemon, Swampert, even found a candy on the way!

Friday, 2:15 pm

We took a short break on a bench to clear out our Pokemon storage. We had to make room for all the Pokemon we were catching! They were EVERYWHERE on campus! We found a Swinub, Metatite, and a couple of Ferroseed that Bear was extra excited about. At this point, we were getting pretty hungry and felt like a late lunch was in order. Thankfully, Kampus Korner was right across the street!

Friday, 2:30 pm

Kampus Korner restaurant was a staple for my husband and I when we attended college at Lamar. Known for its Mediterranean-style kebab burgers, gyros, and chicken special sandwiches, the menu at Kampus Korner was expanded to include pizza, pasta, and various snacks and appetizers after it was remodeled in the middle of my college career. We ordered kebab burgers, onion rings, seasoned fries, and boudin balls – all of which were just as delicious as we remembered. The downtime gave us a great opportunity to plan out our walk back and scope out the PokeStops and gyms ahead.

Friday, 3:30 pm

With happy hearts and full bellies, we started the trek back to our car to go home. We caught a few more Pokemon outside of the Maes building – quite a few Ekans and more Blitzle! – and passed a couple of gyms located at the Peace Circle and library. We took a short break to rest our legs by the library (which is rumored to have inspired the design of Lord Farquad’s castle in Shrek) before heading back to our house.

All in all, it was a successful day of Pokemon Go for this family of casual players. Getting to enjoy a nice walk and yummy food on a beautiful day was the cherry on top of the Alcremie!
